Magic on Krynn

No-one knows for certain what the origins of magical power on Krynn are. It seems to be linked to the gods, but some magic remains even in their abscence. Theories have been proposed that the latent magical "field" of Krynn is residue from the creative power of the gods; others speculate that it is a by-product of life and the development of the soul. Some blame the "Greystone of Gargath", others say that the three Moon Gods brought magic to Krynn (although more commonly the three Moon Gods merely teach the people of Krynn how to control magic). Whatever the truth, various traditions exist for manipulating magic in different ways. The links below take you to more detailed explanations of each of the magical traditions. At the bottom of each page, a section highlighted in grey describes sketchy game mechanics for replicating the magical disciplines.

Folk Magic

All creatures of Krynn carry with them their own magical "field", sometimes going by the name of an "aura" or "life-force". Intelligent beings in general have a more powerful aura than animals. This aura can sometimes be unconsciously manipulated by persons with no magical knowledge, and such manipulations are called by the Mages of High Sorcery as "folk magic". The ability to perform these manipulations are innate and unpredictable.

Shamanic Magic

The magic of the plainsfolk is based around awareness and sensitivity to the spiritual nature of one's surroundings. It is shaped by the beliefs of the Plains culture, and is a based around four principles.

Orders of High Sorcery.

Rarer than folk magic but far more powerful is the method of manipulating magical energies known as High Sorcery. Eons ago, so the practitioners of this art claim, three gods taught mankind how to understand and control the magical energies that form the world. These gods were Lunitari, Nuitari and Solinari. The people that they taught created a formal system whereby those with magical talent could be sought out and taught how to control it, and where knowledge of magic could be shared.

Divine Magic

Before the Cataclysm, legend states that the followers of the gods could call upon them for aid. Although only the most holy were answered, the power of the gods was without measure and they could produce effects that not even High Sorcery can manage.
