Free Software Links
Organizations and Ideas
Free software
is software that comes with permission for anyone to use, copy, and
distribute, either verbatim or with modifications, either gratis or
for a fee. In particular, this means that source code must be
available. "If it's not source, it's not software."
An alternative term, Open
Source, was coined in an attempt to "market" the Free Software
concept in a way that is more palatable to people outside the hacker community. It tends
to be used by those who emphasise the practical benefits of software
released in the form of redistributable source code, whereas the FSF
emphasise the moral and ethical arguments for doing so.
