Short burst

These images show a short burst. A wave is spontaneously initiated at the right of the frame and forms a spiral wave. The spiral wave eventually slows and blocks.

Bursting spirals can persist for a short time (a few rotations, as is shown here) or a long while (80-100 rotations). Bursting spirals repeatedly form under certain culturing conditions. See our PNAS publication for details.

The animated gif image on the right may not be playing the correct speed. For a relatively accurate sample, download the .avi (Windows movie format).
