The Genodisc project hopes to improve the quality of life of people with back pain. New ways to diagnose disc degeneration will help doctors and surgeons choose the right treatment for those patients whose pain is likely to get much worse.

Genodisc aims to answer these questions:

• Why do some people with degenerated discs have pain and others don't?
• Why do discs degenerate so much earlier than other tissues like cartilage?
• Is it possible to prevent discs degenerating?
