My career has been dedicated to understanding the role of ion channels in cardiac cellular physiology, and to developing an integrated mathematical model of the atrial myocytes and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). I grew up in Seoul, Korea and graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1993 to be a medical doctor. After 3 years of clinical practice in Yeonchon Medical Center, I began and completed my Ph.D. in Seoul National University College of Medicine under the supervision of Professor Earm Yung E to investigate the role of ion channels in the mediation of ANP release (1996-2001). I became a lecturer (2000) and an assistant professor (2002) of Department of Physiology, Cheju National University, Jeju, where I gave a lecture on medical physiology and investigated the pacemaker mechanism of ICC. Then I moved to Inje University College of Medicine, Busan, where I joined a laboratory of Mitochondrial Research Group to investigate the role of mitochondria in the ischaemia-reperfusion injury in 2004. Three years later, I became an associate professor of Department of Physiology. Since 2009, I have been a Visiting Research Scientist in Professor Vaughan-Jones’ laboratory in Oxford, studying the mechanism of pHi regulation in cardiac myocytes.
